Anki Takes Its Latest AI Toy From the Racetrack to Cuteville

Artificial Intelligence

Driven by the vision of bringing a robotic character to life, the developers at Anki have created Cozmo, a little robot with a lot of personality. Cozmo might just be a glimpse into the future of play at the intersection of film, toys, video games, and robotics.

Anki, the company that has previously created AI-controlled Overdrive toy racing cars, has a  new follow-up product called Cozmo. The small robot can recognize and remember your face and your name, making it feel almost like a pet.

According to Anki, Cozmo is "a real-life robot like you’ve only seen in movies, with a one-of-a-kind personality that evolves the more you hang out. He’ll nudge you to play and keep you constantly surprised. Cozmo’s your accomplice in a crazy amount of fun."

The robot, who was partially designed by artists from Pixar can display a number of emotions from happy, to sad and many others.

Cozmo moves around, with four wheels and treads, and bulldozer arms. This appendage allows the bot to knock, push and stack "smart blocks," three of which come with Cozmo in the box, and these will be used for different games.

Cozmo expresses emotions as you play, like a Tamagotchi or a Furby. If you stack the blocks correctly, it'll be happy. It'll be be mad if you knock them over. According to Anki, there will be several games available right out of the box, and the robot will remember your favorites and ask to play those when its programming says it's bored.

You can pre-order Cozmo from Anki.com. He ships in October in the U.S., just in time for the holiday season and will be available for $179.99.
