New Camera Could Be the Death of DLSR

Gadgets

Silicon Valley startup Light might have just unleashed a technology that could make DLSR photography.   Their new camera, which is actually an array of 16 optical sensors, puts a whole professional photographer's kit into the palm of your hand, and throws in Android connectivity too.

More than just another digital camera, the Light L16 camera is a new portable device made up of an array of lenses and optical zoom capabilities that puts over $6000 worth of DLSR camera technology into the palm of your hand. With 16 individual camera modules in the same camera body, the light could have a major impact on photography.

With each shot on the Light, ten of the inner optical elements fire simultaneously and are combined to form a 52-megapixel photo. There are five 35mm lenses, five 70mm lenses, and six 150mm in the device. "Our software can figure out how to set the exposures differently for the different cameras to get great low light performance," says Light CEO Dave Grannan.

The camera also offers what it calls infinite depth of field control.  With this, the software on the camera, image focus can be controlled after the image is taken much like the Lytro camera.

The Light has one big advantage over the Lytro though: Powered by Android and equipped with WiFi, the device also makes photos instantly available to be shared on social media, just like a smart phone. It can also shoot 4K video.

In the video below, Robert Scoble spoke with Grannan who demonstrated the camera and explained what makes the Light so unique.

Light is offering a $400 discount to people who reserve the camera now. It is expected to ship to the first round of buyers in the United States in late summer 2016.
