3D Printing a 2D Explainer

3D Printing

3D printing is definitely one of the most exciting technologies in use today. The process allows designers to get ideas physically into their hands by rapid prototyping high detail objects.  The team at Shapeways has shared with us a great infographic all about the technology.

The 3D printing process is relatively new to most people. Already it is estimated that 60% of all enterprise businesses are using 3D printing in some capacity.

Shapeways, is a service and marketplace where anyone can transform digital designs into physical products with 3D printing.

The team at Shapeways has put together an infographic that explains how a design transitions from an idea to a product using 3D printing.

"We’re trying to educate users about the rapid prototyping uses and additive manufacturing process of 3D printing that are explained in the infographic," a Shapeways representative told us.

If you have not had the chance to check out the incredible selections of designs at Shapeways, you may not know that not only are there a lot of fun objects and desktop items and keychains, or XYZWorkshop's robot above. With the wide range of metal finishes available now in 3D printing, jewelry is also featured highly in 3D printing today.

There are also innovative functional objects like smart phone cases and display mounts. One designer has made a custom GoPro mount for use with a paintball helmet.

With Halloween soon approaching, there are also a lot of fun and scary designs available.

What is your favorite 3D printed item?
