It is a literal a leap for robotic development: researchers who built a robotic cheetah have now trained it to see and jump over hurdles while running — making this the first four-legged robot to do so. |
Researchers at MIT have upgraded their cheetah-inspired robot with new algorithms that allow it to jump over obstacles on its own.
Using detection data from a laser sensor on its front, and use data to gauge the distance and height of upcoming obstacles, the algorithms adjust the Cheetah 2's footsteps accordingly to position it for a jump that will clear the obstacle in time.
As the video above demonstrates, the researchers were even confident enough in the programming to let the bot jump without a safety harness, and have it attempt a series of hurdles.
