Avidbots prototypes

 Robotics
With the success of several companies in the home robot vacuum space, it is surprising that robotics have not come to play in  commercial space cleaning yet, but now a start-up called Avidbots is taking on this market.

Avidbots a robotics start-up that won an honourable mention in the Robot Launch 2014 competition — are developing ROS-based commercial cleaning robots. In the United States alone, billions of square feet of commercial floor space are cleaned every night.

Think of the Avidbot robots as the commercial and industrial version of the Roomba.

Avidbots plans to automate the most time-intensive tasks of retail and storehouse cleaning: sweeping and scrubbing of floors.  Think of the Avidbot robots as the commercial and industrial version of the Roomba.

Powered by the open-source Robot Operating System (ROS), these robots may soon clean the floors in grocery stores, airports, and shopping malls.  While the Open Source Robotics Foundation writes that this will, "enabl[e] cleaning staff to concentrate on higher value tasks such as window cleaning, dusting, and polishing," the more likely result will be further technological unemployment for such jobs.

Avidbots has used two platforms for their fast development cycle are ROS and Gazebo. ROS’s communication system promotes a simple modular design, while Gazebo provides for accurate simulation testing.

The modular software design and thorough simulation testing have enabled Avidbots to achieve its rapid development goals. This strategic use of ROS and Gazebo is significantly accelerating Avidbots’ entry into the robotic services space.

Avidbots has calculated some of the costs for their system: they're planning on selling their sweeper robot for $7,500 and the scrubber robot for $13,500, or you can rent them for $4 and $6 per hour respectively, inclusive of warranty and service.
