 3D Printing
The Solidoodle 3D printtercreates actual objects based on computer files, by depositing layers of molten plastic on a platform. Different colors of finished products are achieved simply by using different colors of filament plastic stock. Priced under $500, the Solidoodle is among the most affordable 3D printers available.
The Solidoodle 3D Printer is the creation of former aerospace engineer Sam Cervantes.  Cervantes served as the chief of operations for Makerbot, the Brooklyn-based 3D printer manufacturer.

The reasons for his departure haven't been made public, but for now, he’s been developing another 3D printer, known as the Solidoodle. He recently unveiled the latest model, the Solidoodle 2, which comes fully-assembled for just under $500 US.

The Solidoodle creates actual objects based on computer files, by depositing layers of molten plastic on a platform. Different colors of finished products are achieved simply by using different colors of filament plastic stock.

The Solidoodle 2 is capable of building objects measuring up to 6 x 6 x 6 inches (15.24 cm), which is a step up from the original model’s 4-inch (10 cm) limit. The steel-framed Base model is Windows, Mac, and Linux compatible and includes everything needed to start printing, for US$499. Extras on the $549 Pro model include a heated build platform (to prevent bottom warping of objects), an upgraded power supply and interior lighting, while the $599 Expert model additionally features an outer cover and a front acrylic door.

  6. I use BLender a free open source 3d program, that can basically do what Maya and 3dsMax can. (the programs they use for the game industry and movie industry) But ya you basically can make whatever you want in there when you learn how to use it.(cgcookie.com for free tuts to learn it) I would love a 3d printer to print out all the things I have made in 3d. Also I think google sketchup is compatible with these printers also.
I also drive rc cars and I could see how this could save a ton of money on parts if i could just make my own when i broke one.(at least the plastic ones) Im tempted to go out and get a 500 dollar one but not sure if I should wait a year or two when they are probably a little cheaper but the workspace will probably double or triple in size for the same price.(to get bigger models) Though 500$ is pretty cheap for what it is and maybe even worth it if gonna replace it in a couple years. cya
