Substrate independent minds is the main focus of research for Dr. Randal Koene.

Dr. Koene is perhaps one of the world's foremost neuroscientists. He is director of analysis at Halcyon Molecular, co-founder of Carbon Copies and co-founder of and director at the Neural Engineering Corporation of Massachusetts.

Koene's research objective is whole brain emulation, creating the large-scale high-resolution representations and emulations of activity in neuronal circuitry that are needed in patient-specific neuroprostheses.

Universal Darwinism (also known as generalized Darwinism or universal selection theory) refers to a variety of approaches that extend the theory of Darwinism beyond its original domain of biological evolution on Earth.

The idea is to formulate a generalized version of the mechanisms of variation, selection and heredity proposed by Charles Darwin, so that they can be applied to explain evolution in a wide variety of other domains, including psychology, economics, culture, medicine, computer science and physics.

Koene has written about pattern survival.  The concept of pattern survival is essential to many transhumanists, as it postulates that the signals and connections in our brains and physical bodies make us who we are, and that by duplicating the patterns to an independent substrate, we are effectively duplicating our identity.

According to Koene,
When we combine both of these realizations, then we can describe the effects of Universal Darwinism in the Information Universe as a competition for “Pattern Survival.” A pattern is some specific packet of information, which when put to use will achieve certain interactions and consequences.
