Neural Network Used To Reimagine 2001: A Space Odyssey Through the Eyes of Pablo Picasso

Artificial Intelligence

Using a computational neural network, a data scientist has been able to apply a new type of visual filter over film to generate whole new imagery. In his most recent example, Bhautik Joshi has blended the artistic style of Pablo Picasso with the classic science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Long-time readers will know that 2001: A Space Odyssey ranks as our favorite science fiction film. Now the film has been reworked by data scientist Bhautik Joshi, using Google's neural network, Deep Dream rendered in the style of Picasso. The cubist style brings freshness to Kubrick's great work.

The use of such neural networks, which was research initially done at Google, is already demonstrating itself as a new way of visualizing visual data, as well as helping identify how neural networks are able to carry out difficult classification task.

Such work also makes us wonder whether neural networks could become even more of a tool for artists or even help us examine roots of the creative process in general.

Joshi also has made a version of Blade Runner using Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'.
