Director Christopher Nolan's new movie Interstellar has been shrouded in secrecy, with barely any details released aside from news of the all star cast. Now, the director has unveiled the first trailer for the sci-fi epic, and even in its very brief length, it captures the possibilities of space for humanity and beyond.

W ith only a few short clips of historical footage and Matthew McConaughey's emotional delivery, Christopher Nolan's new trailer for Interstellar demonstrates the almost-magical hold that space means for us.

Interstellar is Nolan's first movie based on an original concept since 2010 hit Inception, with his time taken up in between on the The Dark Knight franchise.

With the idea stemming from a screenplay written by his brother Jonathan, the project originally had Stephen Spielberg at the helm until Christopher got hold of it, rewriting his brother's screenplay.

Little is known about the plot except that it's set in the near future where corn has become the only growable crop in the world, with a scene showing Matthew in a corn field forming the centrepoint of the first trailer.

The movie "chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage," reads the official synopsis.

Other stars of the film include Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine and David Oyelowo. The expected release date of November 2014.

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar Captures the Imagination of Space

We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible.
And we count these moments, these moments when we dared to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars.
To make the unknown known.
We count these moments as our proudest achievements.
But we lost all that.
Perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers.
That we've barely begun, and that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us,
That our destiny lies above us.
