Augmented Reality
Nissan has unveiled their own augmented reality glasses at the Tokyo Auto Show, and named them 3E. The car-maker's step into the internet-device world could signal big changes in the future of your vehicles. |
Google Glass has been the talk of the town for a couple of months now, and it's expected to make a huge impact on the IT industry as soon as it becomes commercially available. But, apart from the IT industry, this futuristic gadget has the potential to affect other fields, as well, including healthcare, law enforcement, and the auto industry, in particular. In fact, Mercedes-Benz, one of the world's biggest car makers, has already shown interest in it, and announced that it plans to integrate it into its infotainment systems in the near future. However, even though Google Glass is the first product of its kind, it's no guarantee that all car manufacturers will choose to collaborate with the tech giant by default.

It's a rather futuristic-looking piece of equipment, that is supposed to provide a deeper connection between the driver and the car. The first major difference between the 3E and Google Glass can be noticed even before you put it on your head and start using it. They have very different designs, with Google going with a somewhat minimalist approach, creating glasses that are light, with a tiny display and thin frames, that look a lot like regular glasses, whereas Nissan's glasses have a bulkier visor that goes over your left eye, along with a curved frame that give the gadget a more dynamic, even eccentric feel to it.
As far as specifications are concerned, there is no detailed information yet, but there are a couple of features that we can be almost sure to see on the 3E. For starters, it will definitely have Internet connectivity, and it will be able to connect to a car via Bluetooth, and it will use a smartphone app to receive and send information. It will likely provide the driver with information on fuel consumption, speed, and various vehicle metrics, as well as GPS directions. Also, driver's will probably be able to receive and read text messages through it. In a word, it's a device that should help drivers monitor their cars' performance.
With the introduction of the 3E glasses, and the Nismo smartwatch, another device that can be integrated into cars' infotainment systems, that they unveiled recently, it's clear that Nissan are determined to become leaders in in-car connectivity, and tap into the wearable technology market, which is growing rapidly. This also means that although Google Glass is not yet officially released, the company that specializes in computer software, Internet and web search might get serious competition from a car maker, that does not have much experience in developing this type of technology.
