 Anti-Aging
Singularity thinking is alive and well at Google.  Along with leading developments in artificial intelligence and robotics, the company is making another 'moonshot' with today's announcement of Calico - a healthcare company with the goal of overcoming aging.

Already having hired none other than Ray Kurzweil as their director of Engineering to help advance artificial intelligence, developing new computer technologies like Google Glass and robotics innovations in their self-driving car, Google's executives are now looking to apply their 'moonshot' Singularity-aimed thinking to the area of helath care and aging.

Google today announced Calico, a new company that will focus on health and well-being, in particular the challenge of aging and associated diseases. Arthur D. Levinson, Chairman and former CEO of Genentech and Chairman of Apple, will be Chief Executive Officer and a founding investor.

Announcing this new investment, Larry Page, Google CEO said: “Illness and aging affect all our families. With some longer term, moonshot thinking around healthcare and biotechnology, I believe we can improve millions of lives. It’s impossible to imagine anyone better than Art—one of the leading scientists, entrepreneurs and CEOs of our generation—to take this new venture forward.”

Levinsion said: “I’ve devoted much of my life to science and technology, with the goal of improving human health. Larry’s focus on outsized improvements has inspired me, and I’m tremendously excited about what’s next.”

Calico is another example of Page’s oft-stated belief that the company should be aiming not just to make the world a little better, but a lot better. Page frequently urges Google employees to engage in so-called 10x thinking—aspiring to develop and innovate at levels that are better than anything that already exists by at least an order of magnitude.
