4 Interesting Medical Technologies That Make Childbirth Safer

An important part of a safe labor and delivery is taking advantage of technology that can make child birth safer.

Fortunately, there are some new and emerging technologies that can help you and your baby stay safe as you welcome your little one to the world. Here are four interesting medical technologies for making childbirth safer:

New Safety Scalpels

Doctors can unintentionally cut a mother’s tissues because of human error or because of the design of their cutting instruments. To fix the problem, Ecomed Solutions has created the Sureglide scalpel. It’s essentially safety scissors for doctors. The scissors allow doctors to make detailed cuts during a C-section without unintentional lacerations in the process.

Inhalable Oxytocin

Right now, postpartum bleeding is one of the leading causes of death after childbirth. Even though the body builds up extra blood during pregnancy, bleeding from the placenta or after a C-section can cause life-threatening complications. While oxytocin is a great drug to treat the problem, right now it’s only available in an injection. The injection takes some skill and training to administer.

The Monash University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) is working to change that. They’ve got a new form of oxytocin that moms can inhale. It’s a dry powder, and it’s not as hard to administer as the shot. The new form of the drug can help moms get the drugs they need to treat postpartum bleeding.

Genetic Screening

Genetic screening can make childbirth safer before pregnancy even starts. When moms opt for in-vitro fertilization, they can use genetic screening to decrease their risks. By testing one cell from an embryo, doctors can determine if the embryo has a normal number of chromosomes. Embryos with a normal chromosome count are more likely to be born alive and healthy than embryos with abnormalities. In fact, women who use the screening process as part of their in-vitro fertilization are more likely to have a live birth without complications than women who don’t opt to use the technology.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring

Monitoring a baby’s heart rate during labor is an important way to prevent birth asphyxia. Even though electronic fetal monitoring is somewhat common in hospitals today, it’s a relatively new technology, and it’s not used everywhere. Identifying a baby in distress can give the medical team time to make adjustments and bring a healthy baby into the world.

Making Child Birth Safer

Emerging technologies can go a long ways to help reduce dangers in child birth. Moms can take advantage of some of these technologies before child birth begins. Others can help during labor and even after. Recent developments have made new technologies available in order to make the birthing process safer and reduce the risks to both mom and baby.

How to Get Into Shape in 5 Months

How can you fit into a sexy dress in five months? You began to panic and you thought that the only way to get into shape in just a short period of time is to ask for divine intervention.

Here’s some good news for you: Achieving your ideal weight in a span of five months is highly possible.

You bumped into a high school friend and she has invited you to attend to her wedding that will happen 5 months from now.

Though quiet excited for her, this invitation gave you cold sweats.

How can you fit into a sexy dress in five months? You began to panic and you thought that the only way to get into shape in just a short period of time is to ask for divine intervention.

Here’s some good news for you: Achieving your ideal weight in a span of five months is highly possible.

Simply follow these easy yet effective tips.

1. Set a goal

A popular quote by Fitzhugh Dodson says "Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination"

This quote is highly applicable when it comes to weight management. Once you made the decision to get into shape, your next question would be: What's my ideal weight?

Set a goal so that your effort is measurable. Also, when setting a goal, make sure that it is attainable in a given period of time. Instead of setting one huge goal, make it smaller and increase it as you go along. Say, your goal for this week is to lose 3 pounds. Increase it to 5 pounds the next week until you have fully reached your ideal weight.

2. Exercise to trim and tone

If you want to fit into an old pair of jeans, you would need to establish a regular workout routine. Invest in exercises that would not only burn those extra calories but would also strengthen your core and give you a toned body.

One example of an exercise that will get you into shape in no time is the dip and crunch exercise. It targets your triceps, shoulders, oblique and abs.

Biking is also an excellent way of getting fit. It’s a good cardio exercise plus it’s an overall workout as it focuses on your arms, legs, hips, but and abs. You also get to enjoy the beautiful sceneries and fresh air.

Research first on the best exercise bikes for weight loss before buying one to ensure that you’re getting the best value for your money.

3. Eat a balanced diet

You can't just raid the fast-food restaurants for every meal and expect to lose weight effortlessly.

Compounded with an active lifestyle, eating a balanced diet will help you get to where you want to be when it comes to the weight department.

Have lots of fruit and vegetables every meal as they are low in calorie, plus they are a good source of fiber, protein and carbohydrates. You can eat as much broccoli as you want without feeling the guilt afterward.

4. Drink adequate fluids

Did you know that drinking fluids, particularly water, can help you lose weight?

Many people have developed the habit of drinking water after they wake up in the morning. This does not only refresh them but also kicks off their metabolism. Drinking plenty of water will also eliminate cravings and overeating. Before you dig on that plate, drink a glass of water first.

Also, lots of hunger cues are actually not hunger at all but thirst. If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water first before heading out to grab a cheeseburger. If your hunger fades, that means that you weren't hungry in the first place.

5. Include strength training

Strength training does not only make you strong, but it's also the easiest way of burning fats and building muscles. It helps you lose fat faster since you are burning more calories when you have more muscles.

Aside from a toned and healthy body, strength training also makes you healthier. It helps you build a strong heart, increases bone density, improves blood circulation, reduces blood pressure, improves cholesterol level, controls blood sugar and improves your coordination and balance.

6. Cut sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats from your diet

Getting into shape needs more focus and discipline. If you want to strut your toned body in a few months, you have to make a conscious decision to stay away from sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.

It's hard initially but once you've established a healthy diet, your body will no longer crave for these unhealthy foods.

There's no magic pill to get fit. It would need lots of determination, focus and discipline. Getting into shape for just a short period of time is not impossible at all. Apply these tips and you will be amazed at how to fit you have become.

Weight Loss Tips that Actually Work

We all have a “fitspiration.” Someone that we look up to and serves as our motivation to reach our ideal body. And so we try all the diet trends and workout routines to achieve a fit and toned body. Some of us even turn to science and seek the help of health professionals such as nutritionists and cosmetic surgeons.

Health

Who does not want to look as hot as Scarlett Johansson or Ryan Gosling?

We all have a “fitspiration”. Someone that we look up to and serves as our motivation to reach our ideal body. And so we try all the diet trends and workout routines to achieve a fit and toned body. Some of us even turn to science and seek the help of health professionals such as nutritionists and cosmetic surgeons.

Not all of these methods are effective though. There are some that will only leave you exhausted and frustrated without showing a promising result.

If you want to effectively lose weight, try these scientifically proven tips that work.

1. Protein at every meal

If you want to lose weight rapidly, have lots of protein at every meal. It’s one of the most important nutrients to get a healthy looking body.

How can protein help in weight loss?

Protein has a positive effect on some of the weight regulating hormones. When you consume a meal that has a higher level of protein, your satiety hormones (peptide YY, GLP – 1, and cholecystokinin) are increased while your hunger hormone is decreased. This means you feel full for a longer period of time and your hunger is majorly reduced. No more overeating or unnecessary snacking.

Protein also boosts your metabolism and makes you burn more calories.

To expedite your weight loss, eat more foods rich in protein such as turkey, chicken, pork, lean beef, sardines, salmon, trout, eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, chickpeas, kidney beans and lentils.

eat protein

2. Don’t skip meals or calories

Most of us are guilty of this practice: Skipping meals to lose weight.

While some may lost some pounds off when they forego eating a meal, it is not always effective. On the contrary, nutritionists discourage us to skip a meal. Skipping a meal would not always result to weight loss, but the opposite.

What will happen if you skip a meal?

Losing weight may occur, but there’s a catch. You will probably drop some weight in the short term, but there’s a higher risk of gaining them back. Plus, the weight that you will lose may not come from fat but from muscles which is not ideal.

You could also run low on nutrients and will likely make up a missed meal with some junk food. You’re hungry so you have a tendency to overeat in order to compensate the hunger. Since you’re running low in energy, you feel exhausted to exercise.

Instead of skipping a meal, eat each meal with a healthy serving of nutritious foods.

3. Remove sugar from your diet

A teaspoon of sugar may not seem to hurt.

Well, each teaspoon contains 16 calories and this does not seem as much, but it can add up if you consume lots of sugary beverages or food. Sugar and weight gain are often linked. Added sugar increases the food’s calorie content and you will certainly gain weight if you consume more calories than you burn.

Removing sugar from your diet will help you consume fewer calories which results to weight loss. Since one teaspoon of sugar is equivalent to 16 calories, cutting out 10 tablespoons of sugar from foods and drinks will cut out 160 calories from your diet. Do that for the entire week and you cut out a total of 1,120 calories.

If you want to reduce your caloric intake, eliminate fruit-flavored drink, soda, cake, candy, ice cream, donuts, cookies and other desserts.

4. Drink lots of water

While drinking 8-10 glasses of water gives you a fresh and hydrated skin, it can also help you in losing some extra pounds.

drinking water

Here’s why you should drink plenty of water every day:

  • It helps in achieving a powerful workout - If you are dehydrated, your workout will suffer as you won’t have the energy and endurance.
  • It speeds up your metabolism - Every time you drink water, your body has to work and burn the calories to process them.
  • It eliminates hunger cues – Thirst is often misread as hunger. If you feel hunger pangs, grab a glass of water first instead of some cookies. Drink a glass of water before your meal to avoid over-eating.

5. Exercise is a must

If you just rely on a diet plan, you won’t be able to achieve your ideal body. Couple your healthy eating habit with a regular exercise to lose weight fast and effectively. If you want to get optimum result of your workout, you can use workout tools such as the Nordic track ellipticals.

These loss tips are not just hearsay; these are backed up by science and facts. Do all of these tips and you’ll be surprised at how much weight you’ve lost in a short span of time.

Future Facts: Predictions Of The Medical World And What They Mean For You

Medicine

In the middle of the 20th century, health scientists believed that it would take five decades for the body of medical knowledge to double in terms of reach and capacity. By the year 2010, that estimate was revised to less than four years. By the end of this decade, medical knowledge is expected to double at least once a year.

The two major medical science breakthroughs that will completely redefine healthcare are stem cell procedures and genetic engineering; these two new treatment methods will likely be widely practiced by 2050. In the meantime, the following predictions are likely to develop in the next few years, and they will have a major impact on the type of healthcare that will be available to you:

Robotic Medical Assistants

The use of robots in medical settings dates back to the 20th century, when they were used in hospitals to dispense medications from the main pharmacy to various inpatient units. Early robots followed optical tracks on the floor to guide themselves and deliver prescriptions that could only be unlocked with certain codes and permissions. In Japan, nursing ward robots can actually help patients get out of bed and move around. A phlebotomy robot is being developed by Silicon Valley engineers for absolute accuracy in drawing blood samples.

Family Nurse Practitioners

The scope of the nursing profession is being expanded for the benefit of patients in the United States, a country that is expected to be impacted by a shortage of family doctors in 2025. Reforms in nursing education and online fnp programs are encouraging registered nurses to seek Master of Science degrees that will allow them to provide medical care as family nurse practitioners. In the near future, you may be calling these family nurse practitioners "doctor."

Artificial Intelligence

Medical information technology is rapidly expanding thanks to major artificial intelligence entities such as the Watson supercomputer developed by IBM. AI solutions are already parsing medical research studies and helping physicians come up with better patient care solutions. At this time, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom is working with Google DeepMind to improve its ophthalmology services.

In the end, the aforementioned advances are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of medical science. Technology and rapidly advances science is constantly changing the world of medicine and what it means for you. While there is no sure way to determine what the future holds, we can be confident some exciting advances are sure to be on their way.

Aroma Science: The Link Between Your Nose and Your Brain

Health

Of the five senses, our sense of smell might be the easiest to dismiss. We are told, after all, that compared to many animals, our noses are sub-par. However, smell is connected directly to the limbic area of the brain, which controls the body’s response to outside stimulus. All other sensory input is routed through another part of the brain first.

Smell can be considered our most primary sense. Scientists continue to study what we can learn from the nose and our sense of smell.

Parts of the Nose

The nose has two nostrils, or napes, which lead to the two nasal cavities. These cavities are separated by a wall of cartilage known as the septum. The cavities lead to the sinus cavities, a system of canals and pockets of air responsible for breathing, smelling, and tasting. This is also the first line of the body’s immune system’s defense. The nose is lined with cilia, hair like projections, and the sinuses create mucus. Together, these work to collect particles before they enter the rest of the body.

The olfactory cleft, on the roof of the nasal cavity, is used for “smelling”, and the olfactory bulb and fossa make up the “smelling” part of the brain. Smells are picked up by some of the 450 olfactory receptors in the nose and then travel to the brain.

Memories: What the Nose Knows

When an odor molecule binds to a receptor, an electrical signal travels from the sensory neuron to the olfactory bulb. The piriform cortex works to identify the smell and this information is sent to the thalamus: the “senses” center of the brain. The thalamus sends this information to the hippocampus and amygdala, brain regions involved in learning and memory. This is why smells are so deeply connected with certain memories. In fact, certain scents may help you remember facts better – something to keep in mind while studying!

Emotional Wellness

From our memory, to our immune system, to our learning ability, smell has an importance that is hard to overstate. New research even suggests that the nose can detect over a trillion different smells, thus outperforming the eyes and ears. The aroma of a certain scent or essential oils like doTERRA oils can trigger specific reactions, emotions, or memories. When a scent in inhaled, it goes through the olfactory system and the connected limbic system, which produces a distinct response based on the experiences associated with the smell.

The nose knows! In the future, additional research will doubtless help make sense of this fascinating sense.

Upward Developments: How Technology Keeps Advancing & Improving Our Health

Medical Technology

As research and testing is carried out around the world, healthcare is one of the industries that's always at the forefront of emerging technologies.

New techniques, evolving IT systems, and cutting-edge equipment are being integrated into healthcare systems that are advancing patient care more rapidly than ever. Here are just some of the ways that new technology is improving our health.

Related articles

Wearable Technology

A growing range of wearable devices is helping to improve patient care. Outside the hospital, individuals with serious medical conditions can be outfitted with wearables that monitor glucose levels, blood pressure, and more. With Wi-Fi technology, these devices provide an automatically downloaded record of patient care to healthcare computers. They can also issue alerts or medication reminders when readings fall below acceptable levels. Even home health patients remain connected for fast response in emergencies.
3D Printers

Since the arrival of 3D printing, healthcare researchers have been devoted to creating biologic materials that can be applied in the additive form of manufacturing. Using stem cells and incubation techniques, medical professionals are already reproducing a number of cell types that can be used to grow living tissue. This is gradually making it possible to recreate a patient's skin cells, blood vessels, muscle, cartilage, bones, and even heart tissue to custom specifications, and without the risk of rejection.

Analytics

These devices are part of the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart technology can monitor conditions and feed real-time data into information systems for analysis. Far beyond simply recording vital signs, facility sensors, cameras, bar codes, and microchips can track patients, staff, equipment, and supplies in a variety of ways, 24/7. Qualified professionals, such as those who may have their mba in computer information systems, can perform analyses to improve efficiency and reduce waste. This leads to not only better care, but lower costs that can be passed on to consumers.

Internal Sensors

It's also possible to aid diagnoses and treatments from the inside. Sensors that the patient can swallow have been around for several years now and are steadily improving. These small devices, no bigger than a large pill, can relay information on how various body systems are functioning, as well as the effects of medications on particular processes. They can be powered by the human metabolism itself to continue providing internal data that doctors otherwise couldn't get without extensive testing.

These technologies are becoming technical standards in patient care that combine to provide faster and more accurate results. More efficient diagnoses and treatments due to developing technology will save more lives.

How a Male Fertility Test Can Secure Your Family Life

Health

For people trying to conceive without success, your doctor will most likely prescribe that you and your partner undergo fertility testing so that accurate medical advice for successful conception can be given. Now thanks to technology, such tests can be performed at home.

If you and your significant other have been trying to conceive for at least a year but without any luck, your doctor will most likely prescribe that both of you undergo fertility testing so that accurate medical advice for successful conception can be given. On your part, a male fertility test is highly recommended.

A Glimpse into Sperm Analysis

Analyzing semen for detecting specific infertility issues is not limited to just sperm count or concentration. It must also consist of the following characteristics:
  • Volume of the Semen
  • Sperm Movement or Motility
  • Sperm Vitality
  • Total Number of Sperm
  • Sperm Morphology or Shape

While having more normal-shaped sperm generally points to higher fertility, some cases prove to be exceptions. For instance, it has been found that most men who happen to have abnormal semen or low sperm count show no signs of infertility problems. Furthermore, statistics show that over 10 % of infertile men appear to have high normal sperm count as well as normal semen.

So How Does a Male Fertility Test Go?

Routine fertility testing for men is simple; but it can be a source of great worry, discomfort and embarrassment for many. If the test is to be conducted in a clinical setting, you are required to produce a sample of your semen in a lab. Not only is this procedure awkward, it is quite expensive as well, since the testing and analysis of the sample demands pricey digital equipment.

On the other hand, hospitals that lack such modern machinery rely on a technician for an old-school analysis of the sperm sample using a microscope. While this may be cheaper, it must be understood that results are prone to human error.

Have Your Sperm Analyzed in the Comfort and Privacy of Your Own Home – Via Your Smartphone!

If you are a more private person and don’t wish to personally go to a clinic for that embarrassing visit, sperm analysis is now well within easy reach. More than just the crude and costly home sperm tests that are limited to sperm count and concentration, there now exists modern home sperm testing technology that is easier to use, more affordable and not to mention more private. Such optimized kits are designed not only for sperm count and concentration measurement but also motility assessment.

Here’s how it works:
  1. Upon ordering a kit, you will be asked to specify your phone type or model. The kit will utilize your phone’s camera and video light. It also comes with a detachable clip that serves as a mini microscope.
  2. Next, simply download a Home Sperm Test app for free.
  3. Finally, follow the specific instructions, test your sperm sample and gain instant access to a live video of your sperm in motion, plus accurate and automatic results. Rest assured that your data will remain confidential, private and safe.
testing sperm count on smartphone

Aside from the fear of the embarrassing male fertility test, there are many other reasons why most men refuse to seek infertility treatment. Nevertheless, this techy tool hopefully encourages otherwise hesitant men to have regular sperm checks to keep their reproductive health in top shape and finally start the family they plan on having.

Medical Alert Systems for Peace of Mind

Health

Like many Americans, you may live in constant fear regarding the safety of your aging loved ones, and even if they don’t require much care as of now, you understand that a slip and fall accident or could happen at any moment. Of course, the former is quite possible even for younger people; it’s simply more likely for older ones. This is where medical alert systems come into play.

This short article takes a moment to look at the top gps medical alert systems for seniors review to find the ones that can best be tailored to suit their lifestyles.

Bay Alarm Medical Alert System

An industry-leading option for seniors; Bay Alarm Medical Has an in-home kit as its base offering; this connects to a landline and provides operation to a wireless device on the person no matter where they are in the house. If you don’t have a landline (not uncommon in this day and age), then Bay Medical also offers the in-home cellular alert kit.

You should know that the automatic fall detection is sold separately. For seniors who are on the go, there’s a mobile gps device, too. It works reliably with the expansive T-Mobile cellular network, and you don’t have to be an actual client of T-mobile on your day-to-day cell phone plan to use it with the medical alert system.

The LifeStation Mobile GPS Option

Medical Alert Systems

Appropriately-named, this very customer-centric medical alert system company has its elderly customers in mind as much as the very best do - such as Bay Alarm and Medical Guardian. The Fall Detection add-on send a signal immediately when a person has fallen. The gps mobile product speaks for itself - its range is unlimited and its tailor-made to be carried on trips and outings.

Related articles
For the home-bodies, there’s the traditional medical alert system that operates with whatever phone carrier you have, and requires you to hit a button for help. An even better in-home alternative is LifeStation’s in-home wireless device that allows you to wear the apparatus on your person, and press for help in the event of an emergency.

Medical Guardian

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive medical alert system than the premium version of Medical Guardian’s service suite. The presiding network is AT&T, and it covers all the features of the other models in their service suite. This includes the Mobile Guardian, the Home Guardian and the Classic Guardian. The Fall Detection is optional, and the Family Guardian is one level up from Premium - it provides you with real-time information on the status of the apps so that you know your loved ones are safe.

MobileHelp is a Reliable Brand

MobileHelp has the Mobile Help Solo and the Duo option - depending on your needs and the number of seniors seeking coverage. The Duo option is specifically for people who are frequently outside the home, where portability is the primary concern. It comes with a home base station, and so can also be used like an in-house unit. The Fall Detection is considered an add-on, and as of May 2017, runs about an extra $10 per month extra. It will alert the operators of a problem if the gyroscope detects that you’ve fallen and cannot physically access the button.

The greatest impediment to health is not receiving help quickly enough. Medical alert systems do a great job of cutting down the times, by making sure someone is always available to send help to your loved one.

How 21st Century Med Tech is Changing the Healthcare Industry

Health

The medical technology of the 21st century has changed nearly everything about how health care is provided. From keeping track of a patient's medications and medical history to providing a rapid diagnosis, technology affects every aspect of healthcare services.

Consider these top four ways in which med tech is changing the healthcare industry.

Automated Laboratory Testing

While laboratory tests to check blood cell counts, hormone levels and antibodies used to take days to perform, today's medical technology has automated these once labor-intensive tasks. Automation now allows these tests to be performed in mere hours or even minutes. If a patient is facing a life-threatening situation, these fast results can provide critical information to physicians.

Related articles

Electronic Medical Records

In this digital age, electronic medical records have brought considerable change to the healthcare industry. When you go to a networked provider, your entire record can be accessed. This allows your endocrinologist, family doctor, and other healthcare professionals to see your overall health picture. Electronic medical records can also be used during an emergency situation, allowing emergency medical technicians and emergency room physicians to access your allergy and blood type information.

X-ray Technology

X-ray technology has come a long way since the bulky machines and individual films of decades past. Today's X-ray technology is digital, which means that radiologists can see the images almost instantaneously. Professionals, like those at Rural Health Services Consortium Inc., know how helpful this can be in making a diagnosis. Images can also be sent to multiple providers at once, such as infectious disease and orthopedic specialists. This allows for a rapid diagnosis of injuries such as bone fractures and illnesses such as pneumonia. Today's X-ray technology is safe and comfortable for the patient.

Telemedicine

Telemedicine is another innovative way that technology is used in healthcare. With telemedicine a person at a small hospital in a rural location can be evaluated by specialists hundreds of miles away at a trauma center. Telemedicine allows for the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening conditions such as stroke. Telemedicine can also be used for triage, allowing for the efficient delivery of patients to the most appropriate type of trauma or emergency care facility.

Telemedicine

Medical technology changes the healthcare experience for patients, doctors and administrators alike. Enhanced efficiency, greater productivity and improved safety are all benefits of today's medical technology in the healthcare industry. As technology continues to advance, healthcare consumers and providers can expect to enjoy a boost in accuracy of diagnosis, personalized treatment plans and more options for receiving healthcare at rural and out-of-the-way facilities.

Six Scientific Reasons Why Regular Exercise Is Helpful

Health

Life, as we know it, has no duplicate. Thus, it is imperative that we make a conscious effort to live a healthy lifestyle. The role of exercise in keeping our bodies fit cannot be overstated.

What is it that makes what many consider such an exhausting, difficult-to-accomplish physical activity so beneficial to human health? It’s about time to lift that lazy behind off that couch and start exercising.

Check out the six scientific reasons why regular exercise is helpful:

1. Exercise reduces stress and anxiety

Exercise helps boost the production of feel-good neurotransmitters or happy hormones called endorphins. While this feeling of euphoria is mostly associated with running, a rousing game of basketball or a good hike around the neighborhood can also incite the same feeling.

It’s much like meditation in motion. After having completed several laps in the pool, you’ll often notice that you’ve somehow overlooked the day’s stresses and focused only on your body’s movements. When you start to regularly brush off your daily tensions through physical activity, you’ll also begin to notice that such focus on a single task, and the optimism and boost of energy it brings, can help you achieve a sunny disposition and calmness of mind in your day-to-day routines. Rowing machines are very helpful for fitness and at significantly reducing your stress and anxiety levels as well.

2.Exercise improves your executive functions

Executive functions refer to the set of cognitive mechanisms necessary for behavior control and goal-directed cognition that develop throughout childhood and adolescence. A recent study shows that regular aerobic exercises play a crucial role in promoting children’s executive functions. A tentative evidence further elucidates that not all forms of aerobic exercises yield equal benefits on executive functions, with cognitively-engaging exercises appearing to have a stronger impact than non-engaging exercises on children’s executive functions.

3. Exercise helps you live longer

As recently discussed in the New York Times, among the ways exercise increases your life span is by lowering your risk for contracting heart disease. It further cites a recent Australian study featured in PLOS One that sets out to quantify the role of physical activity in reducing one’s risk for cardiovascular diseases.

Another study published in the November 2013-issue of the journal Stroke showed how daily walking significantly lowers a person’s risk of stroke among men over the age of 60. This condition involves an obstruction of blood flow (ischemic stroke) or a rupture of an artery that transports oxygenated blood to your brain (hemorrhagic stroke), with the former accounting for nearly 80 percent of all cases.

4. Exercise helps you manage your weight

It is common knowledge that regular exercise can help you effectively prevent excess weight gain or maintain your weight. When you perform a fitness activity, you shed off those unwanted calories. The more intense it is, the more calories you burn.

Compelling scientific evidence shows that exercise can help you manage your weight over time. The exact amount of exercise required, however, is not definite, since it varies significantly from one person to another. It may be possible that you would need to increase the frequency or duration of moderate-intensity activity in a week to maintain your weight.

5. Exercise helps you sleep better

Albeit the exact mechanisms are unclear, there are many possibilities as to how exercise can reduce insomnia severity. One notable way is through the thermogenic effects of exercise, especially when done in the afternoon or later. Exercise triggers thermogenesis, a metabolic process during which your body burns calories to produce heat. When the body temperature drops, this promotes falling asleep.

Exercise also reduces insomnia by suppressing anxiety, arousal, and other depressive symptoms. Insomnia is commonly associated with anxiety, increased arousal, and depression, and exercise has shown to effectively reduce such symptoms in the general population. Another way exercise helps promote sleep is by regulating circadian rhythms (body clock). For those that have been experiencing insomnia due to their erratic body clocks, exercise may correct the timing depending on what time it is performed.

6. Exercise gives you more willpower

Dutch researchers delved into previous studies to have this aspect figured out. They wanted to see if they could dig out a legitimate link between willpower and exercise. Having combed through the exercise literature, they came up with a total number of 24 studies that deal with the effect of physical activity on higher brain functions, such as memory, planning, and decision making. They broke down the data a bit further, separating them between long and short rounds of exercise and into age groups (6 to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 to 35).

Results suggest that short rounds of exercise did help stimulate higher brain functions in all age groups. One of the most significant areas was that associated with self-control. Twelve of the nineteen studies were focused on such specific area, and they unveiled a slight to moderate effect across all age groups. The authors attributed this to the surge in blood flow to the brain’s frontal area, which is associated with higher thought processes and functioning.
