 Smart Televisions
Despite plenty of hype and  initial market promise, 3D television seems to be ending up a fad that didn't catch on.  According to guest writer Celina Jones, the emergence of Smart TV's as a preferable alternative is the main cause of 3D television's failure in the marketplace.
The electronics market is unpredictable. Thanks to new technology, improved electronics are hitting the shelf at regular intervals making it difficult for the general public to make a decision regarding what they should go for and what they should give a miss.

The television industry has also seen several ups and downs due to this technological phase. Over the years we have seen an influx of bigger and better television sets that are designed to improve the television viewing experience.

LCDs and LEDs are now considered outdated as new technology is already available in the market. Now televisions have actually turned smart. They are interactive and serve several purposes. They are not merely for viewing pleasure, but have the capability to do a lot more.

Giving tough competition to Smart TVs are 3D TV sets that bring the 3D technology inside your living room. With this television set, you will not have to step out to enjoy your favorite movie in 3D. The idea is definitely exciting and met with huge acclaim when it was initially announced. However, this proved to be a cracker that quickly fizzled.

The Outcome

If reports are to be believed, 3D sets have been snubbed by consumers who seem to prefer Smart TVs. Research by IHS Screen Digest says that in 2012 over a quarter of all TV sets sold were Smart TVs. The experts predict a rise in this trend as people are quickly turning to Smart television. It is expected that by 2015, half of the television sets sold will be Smart TVs with the numbers even increasing in the upcoming years.

The result came as a shock to many as a lot of people had their money riding on 3D television sets that were expected to bring a revolution to the world. However, they seem to have totally fizzled down now with Smart TVs ruling the roost.

The Reasons For the Failure

Different people give different reasons for the failure of 3D sets with the lack of 3D content being one of the main reasons. After all, what is the point of spending thousands in buying a 3D TV when there is no 3D content to view? One can watch great shows on Smart TV thanks to satellite television.

Hollywood 3D blockbusters are not readily available to be watched in 3D at home. Experts are working on this but the hopes are not very high as this does not seem to be turning into a reality soon. Some even argue that production houses are not in favor of making their movies available on 3D for home audiences as it might result in a deduction in overall revenue. Nonetheless, nothing concrete is available on this at the moment.

The Experts Speak

Shedding light on the study, an analyst at IHS said, “Despite a decline in global television shipments in 2012, consumer demand for Internet-connected televisions soared during the year and the surge in sales shows no signs of abating.”

Many reports suggest that a lot of people are unhappy with Smart TV sets as well as some find the interface very difficult. Nonetheless, Smart TV sets seem to completely overshadow 3D sets as far as the market share is concerned.

The representative also added “Smart TVs are rapidly joining the mainstream as manufacturers refine their products to add new features and to make them easier to use.”

What Went Wrong – What Went Right

One cannot credit a single attribute for the success of Smart TVs or the failure of 3D TVs. Still, many experts are of the view that the internet connectivity option that Smart TV offers is of great attraction to many. This option brought certain uniqueness to the Smart TV as it allowed people to get more out of a regular television set.

In case of 3D television sets, many believe that the experience is not same. Plus, 3D television screens are also believed to cause health issues if the eyes are exposed to 3D content for a long period of time.

Conclusion

It is difficult to clearly pinpoint the reasons for the rise in Smart TVs and the fall in 3D TVs. Some would say it is pure luck; however, we’d say the main reason for the surge in Smart TV sets is people’s perception and changing taste.
