In an enlightening TEDx talk, Allan Jones explains the processes used to map the human brain at the Allen Institute.
Launched in 2003 with a seed contribution from founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, the Allen Institute takes on large-scale initiatives designed to push brain research forward, enabling the global scientific community to more efficiently make discoveries that bring real-world utility.

The institute's mission is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, the Allen Institute generates useful public resources, drives technological and analytical advances, and discovers fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments modeling and theory.

Allan Jones joined the Allen Institute in 2003 to help start up the organization as one of its first employees. Bringing extensive expertise in project leadership and high-throughput genomics operations from prior management positions at Merck and Co., Rosetta Inpharmatics and Avitech Diagnostics, Jones was instrumental in recruiting an integrated interdisciplinary team, building the Institute's scientific operations from the ground up and successfully driving the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas to completion in 2006.

Jones provided strategic leadership and vision through the expansion of the Institute's portfolio of large-scale, high-impact initiatives from the mouse brain atlas through to work on the human brain. Allan has broad scientific experience in genetics, molecular biology and development.

In the TEDx talk embedded below, Jones explains the processes used to map the human brain at the Allen Institute. Using the high-throughput facility at the Allen Institute complete with custom-designed robotic systems, automated digital imaging technologies, premier bench laboratory space and all the high-powered computing hardware and software necessary for processing petabytes of data the team are uncovering the fundamental science behind our most important organ.
