Michael E. Lopez-Alegria is a former NASA astronaut, International Space Station commander and test pilot. A four-time astronaut he holds three NASA records including the longest spaceflight at 215 days. In a recent TEDTalk, Lopez-Alegaria shares his extraordinary story and gazes into the future of spaceflight as the new President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation.
Former NASA astronaut Micheal E. Lopez-Alegria is known for having performed ten EVAs so far in his career, presently holding the #2 all-time EVA duration record and having the longest spaceflight of any American at the length of 215 days; this time was spent on board the ISS from September 18, 2006 to April 21, 2007.

As of March 12, 2012, Lopez-Alegria has been serving as Presient of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, which is chaired by Eric Anderson, also of Planetary Resources.

Anderson stated, “We are incredibly excited to have someone as capable as Michael Lopez-Alegria leading the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. Michael is a leader and a true pioneer whose first-hand experience with spaceflight and the International Space Station will be invaluable to our members and to the Federation.”

The mission of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation (CSF) is to promote the development of commercial human spaceflight, pursue ever-higher levels of safety, and share best practices and expertise throughout the industry.

The Commercial Spaceflight Federation’s member companies, which include commercial spaceflight developers, operators, spaceports, suppliers, and service providers, are creating thousands of high-tech jobs nationwide, working to preserve American leadership in aerospace through technology innovation, and inspiring young people to pursue careers in science and engineering

In the TEDTalk video below, Lopez-Alegria reviews the history of human space exploration and points to the future of commercial space flight and activity.  He points to 2017 as a turning point in the industry where the cycle will really take off.
