OrcaM - Serious 3D Scanner

Thursday, January 19, 2012

The OrcaM is a 3D scanning system that looks more like a prop from a science fiction movie than like the 3 scanners we discussed in our previous post.  The system uses a multi camera setup inside a giant black sphere.  Stunning 3D models of nearly anything you care to place inside, and it does so completely automatically. The OrcaM Orbital Camera System has seven cameras and loads of lightulbs inside to illuminate and capture objects from many angles at a time, and its creators at Germany's Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) claim the resulting 3D geometry is accurate down to the sub-millimeter.

Some of the features of the OrcaM are:
  • Photographs of the object with 7 cameras
  • Projecting patterns on the project with light beams
  • Cameras and projectors are fixed point-focused, but flexible
  • Height-adjustable stage with recording option from below
  • Shadow-free recording capability
  • Photographs of the project from all directions in space
  • Photographs of the project with hochdiffusem light
  • Photographs of the project with light spots from as many directions in space
  • Simple operation, ie easy opening and closing of the exchange of objects OrcaM

This video demonstrates the OrcaM 3D reconstruction system from the hardware and usability point of view:

The aim of Orcam is the automated transfer of real objects in a high-quality digital representation for the purpose of making available in digital media like the Internet, movies, pictures and computer games.
The reconstructions in particular allow a subsequent illumination of the object, the seamless embedding of objects, for example, in video recordings of real scenes possible.
