LED Lights to Get Cheaper

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Last year when Philips won the L-Prize for super high-performance, energy-saving replacements for conventional light bulbs it the bulb created was admittedly called, the "Ferrari of light bulbs."  Now IEEE Spectrum reports that LED light bulbs are about to become more affordable mainstream.

By year's end you can expect a drop in price of the technology. The powerful LEDs used for lighting will be 27 percent less expensive, says the United Kingdom–based market analysis firm IMS Research, and that drop in cost will make a big impact on the price of the bulb.

One reason why it's getting cheaper to make LED chips is that producers are migrating to larger wafers. However, the most important reason is simple economics: The LED market is awash with devices following a production ramp-up in China, which is making great efforts to cut energy consumption, says market analyst Ross Young of IMS Research.

Another benefit of LED light bulbs?  Data transmission.  Harald Haas has demonstrated, a device that could transmit data by flickering the light from a single LED, a change too quick for the human eye to detect, he can transmit far more data than a cellular tower -- and do it in a way that's more efficient, secure and widespread.
