Ingenious Cutaway Diagrams

Core77 recently featured amazing illustrations by Graham Bleathman.

What separates Bleathman from the other artists I've featured is that his illustrations are almost cartoony. Obviously his source material isn't exactly very realistic, but he embraces that. Bleathman's color palette is light and playful, much like the television shows, and his cross-sections imagine a retro-futuristic world. The mechanics of the Thunderbirds or the Stingray submarine aren't that important, but it's the possibility that they could potentially exist that makes them wonderful.

Graham Bleathman is probably best known for his cutaways (cross-sections). He has always been inspired by this type of artwork and he was especially delighted when he was approached by Alan Fennell in the early 1990s to create new cutaways for the Thunderbirds Comic. At the time, Graham was producing cutaway artwork for the Bristol Evening Post newspaper on a variety of topics from Formula 1 cars to Cathedrals.
