A Social Networking Site for Robots?

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Do you have a lonely robot at home that is just looking to connect with someone just like itself?  myrobots.com may be the answer.

MyRobots is a subsidiary of RobotShop offering web-base services. The portal was launched December 20th, 2011.

You can think of MyRobots as a social network for robots and smart objects. In the same way humans benefit from socializing, collaborating and sharing, robots can benefit from those interactions too by sharing their sensor information giving insight on their perspective of their current state.
MyRobots.com aims to connect all robots and intelligent devices to the Internet. In doing so potential augmentation of capabilities remotely monitoring and control may be possible. Cloud robotics may be a potential of the site.
Sample Report from MyRobots.com

According to MyRobots, com, the potential benefits are:
Humans:
  • Greater freedom
  • Getter user-experience
  • Better communication with robots
  • Real-time knowledge
  • Better return on investment

Robots:
  • Increased capabilities
  • Greater functionality
  • More Intelligence
  • Longer useful life
  • Collaboration with humans and robots

It's not the first effort to harness the web to enhance robot communication. RoboEarth has been touted as the world wide web for robots. Robots upload their experiences at solving a particular task, allowing other robots to learn from that data. It is mainly designed for research roboticists, whereas MyRobots.com is about consumers.

MyRobots.com is also planning to host a robot app store.  Unlike apps for cell phones, at MyRobots.com the emphasis will be on cloud-based software so that the robots' resources are kept as free as possible.
