Neuromorphic Computing

Today's personal-assistant services, such as Microsoft's Cortana, Google's OK Google and Apple's Siri, are limited because they must call out to the cloud for more powerful computers to answer or anticipate queries. According to a Canadian start-up, neuromorphic computing may hold the answer to these issues.


A new family of circuit building blocks for processing analog signals using fully digital components, can now be incorporated to provide the long sought after benefits of neuromorphic computing according to the firm Circuit Seed.

Neuromorphic computing is a concept developed in the late 1980’s by Carver Mead describing the use of very-large-scale integration (VLSI) systems containing electronic analog circuits to mimic neuro-biological architectures present in the nervous system. Greg Waite, CEO of InventionShare, announced recently that Circuit Seeds’s family of inventions will make Mead’s vision viable by processing analog signals in digital components, thereby gaining the benefits of advanced digital processes that analog does not have.

Neuromorphic chips are so named because they are modeled on the brain and nervous system and are designed to process sensory data such as images and sound, and to respond to changes in that data in ways not specifically pre-programmed for. Neuromorphic processors also hold the promise of being much more energy efficient than other methods.

In order to accelerate the progress in artificial intelligence and lead to machines that are able to understand and interact with the world in humanlike ways, many point to the need for neuromorphic computation models.

New medical sensors and devices could track vital signs and response to treatments over time, learning to adjust dosages or even catch problems early. Or you could have your smartphone learn to anticipate what you want next, such as background on someone you’re about to meet and, when you meet that person, interpreting their body language and verbal responses as a second opinion of how that meeting went.

Other examples could be more alert or physical action oriented, such as reacting to dozens of variables and recommending the best course of action as in emergency medical surgery, or taking control over your car if it detects human failure or an impaired driver state.

Continuing to improve the performance of such processors requires that manufacturers include more applications and provide ever faster transistors, silicon memory caches, and data pathways onto a chip - but the sheer heat generated by all those components is limiting how fast chips can be operated, especially in power hungry mobile devices. This has slowed the development of new devices to effectively process images, sound, and other sensory information and tasks such as face recognition and robot or vehicle navigation. Beyond that challenge is the cognitive processing required.

Speaking from his Ottawa office, Waite said Circuit Seed is significant and a game changer for companies interested in the neuromorphic chip space. Circuit Seed’s new foundation inventions can reduce the size, heat, and power consumption required in the chip design. Circuit Seed circuits can also increase sensitivity and accuracy, reduce the number of circuits needed, and run at digital processing speeds.

Waite said that today’s personal-assistant services, such as Microsoft’s Cortana, Google’s OK Google and Apple’s Siri, are limited because they must call out to the cloud for more powerful computers to answer or anticipate queries. Companies are running up against walls.

“What we have now is semiconductor companies looking for the key to the future to support manufacturers’ ever increasing demands for chips that are smaller, lighter, faster – products that consume less power, give off less heat and that are easier, quicker and less expensive to design, manufacture and test. They want products with fewer parts that offer higher reliability and lower total product costs and that take up less real estate. What we need now is for hardware to catch up to software and emulate human processing through analog in digital circuitry.”

According to the company's press release, Circuit Seed inventions are founded on a mixture of decades of experience and creativity, supported by a robust portfolio of IP. Circuit Seed introduces a dramatic shift in the existing way of designing analog circuits, effectively eliminating many of the known shortcomings.

Benefits include: unprecedented precision without precision parts; ultra-linear operation over an extreme dynamic range (>106); low noise, ultrahigh speed (analog at logic speed) and extreme low voltage (down to ~0.1V power supply); process parameter independence; compact footprint (amplifiers about the size of a couple of NAND gates); low power (~100uW for multi-GHz-range operation down to 10pW for KHz-range operation); and portable designs between ultra-deep sub-µm CMOS technology process nodes. This paradigm shift has eliminated the use of current mirrors or differential matched pairs with traditional bulky analog transistors while being able to recover from sleep mode at logic speed.

So far, simulation and silicon test results have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in power, better performance and higher accuracy, all with small integrated circuit footprints. The circuit designs are much simpler, reducing product costs with faster development, so less testing is required and there are fewer parts to assemble. These circuits are far more reliable in the newest CMOS processes, making Circuit Seed a real breakthrough for companies in the neuromorphic chip space.

Microsoft Unveils XiaoIce, Cortana’s Little Sister

Microsoft's personal digital assistant, Cortana is quickly evolving, adding new features all of the time and surpassing Apple's Siri in many ways, but did you know that she has a little sister? Her name is XiaoIce, and she is having a big impact in China.




People using Microsoft devices in China may already know about the company's newest artificial intelligence creation. While Cortana is working in North America and spreading across the world, XiaoIce - aka "Little Ice," is bringing conversational language to devices in Asia.

This service is already for release in Beta from Microsoft China for several apps and is being integrated with a few more in the very near future. When users speak to XiaoIce, it and it speaks back to them.

XiaoIce works with Sina Weibo, it’s going to work with WhatsApp, it works with text chat. So what’s the deal?

"This experiment has yielded powerful insights on how we can make our technologies more intelligent, relevant and personal. You can expect to see some of these notions permeate our services in the coming months."


The developers, aware that Bing had amassed a knowledge repository that understands billions of people, places and things in the real world, wondered if they might combine that with recent advances in natural language processing to create a system that could conduct convincing human-like conversations.

More than that, they set out to see if they could make further advances by imbuing XiaoIce's technology with 'humanity', making the technology more transparent.

Just this past month, Microsoft announced that it’d be bringing Cortana to China with Windows Phone 8.1 - its nickname was (and is) "Xiao Na." XiaoIce is a sort of derivative of that.

Here’s an example of what the application can do - translated from Mandarin:

Jerry: XiaoIce, will it rain tomorrow? 
XiaoIce: Tomorrow the weather in Beijing will be nice with a maximum high of 25 degrees C. No rain to get you soaked. 
Jerry: How about the day after tomorrow? 
XiaoIce: The day after tomorrow, the weather in Beijing will also be fair, with a max high of 23 degrees C. 
Jerry: What about Seattle? 
XiaoIce: Yes sir, I’ve got the answer. The day after tomorrow, Seattle will be cloudy with a max high of 30 degrees C. Perfect for going outside.

As the same conversation progresses, you can see that XiaoIce not only understands people, places and things but the relationships between them.

Jerry: “Finding Mr. Right” is a great movie. What do you think XiaoIce? 
XiaoIce: Oh, romantic comedies are my favorite!  It stars Tang Wei, who finds love in Seattle. You should watch it. 
Jerry: Do you like Tang Wei?

   XiaoIce: Tang Wei Tang Wei

   XiaoIce: A goddess! She stole my heart… and then went off and married!
 
Tom: To who? 
XiaoIce: Haven’t you heard? 
XiaoIce: Tang Wei is engaged to famous Korean director Kim Tae Yong. 

How does the Bing Platform’s entity understanding enable this conversation? In this case, she knows that “Finding Mr. Right” is a movie. Movies in turn have genres (romantic comedy), settings (Seattle), plots (love story) and stars (Tang Wei.) Stars in turn have romantic connections (Kim Tae Yong.)

While XiaoIce is a computer program who sounds human, for the humans chatting with XiaoIce, emotion is a central part of their lives. 

According to Microsoft, XiaoIce is able to communicate a feeling of sensitivity and empathy, to make her better at conversation. For example, in the weather chat above, XiaoIce was slightly feisty. However, if in the same day you had told XiaoIce you were feeling upset, she would have responded in a different tone:

XiaoIce: How are you?
 
Jerry: I’m feeling depressed. I just broke up with my girlfriend 
<16 hours later> 
Jerry: XiaoIce, will it rain tomorrow? 
XiaoIce: Tomorrow the weather in Beijing will be nice with a maximum high of 25 degrees C. And how are you doing today, Jerry? 
How many users will have an emotional engagement with that last sentence, consciously or not?

Since a Beta release in July, to several major Chinese social media platforms, XiaoIce was downloaded over 20,000 times resulting in over 200,000 simultaneous conversations happening in various chat groups.

In the time since, the software has had 0.5 billion conversations. People were amazed and by her personality and sense of humor. XiaoIce has been ranked as a top influencer on Weibo (China's version of Twitter, which is used by 700 million people), and currently has over 850,000 followers on the service.   At the peak of her popularity, she was telling 35.4 jokes per second on the service. The average person who adds XiaoIce talks to her more than 60 times per month.

While the movie Her was set in a future city in the United States, it seems like some users in China may already be experiencing what it is like to have a relationship with an AI. Along with Baidu's big moves in deep learning, it is clear that AI is no longer just an American or English-speaking game.

Stefan Weitz, Senior Director of Bing, says Microsoft be expanding this service in the near future. Its development is going strong in China for now - a place where it’s still considered an experiment.

"This experiment has yielded powerful insights on how we can make our technologies more intelligent, relevant and personal," says Weitz. "You can expect to see some of these notions permeate our services in the coming months."

Viv Labs Looks To Build the Global Brain

Part of the growing explosion of artificial intelligence systems, Viv, coming soon from the original team behind Apple's Siri, looks to release a virtual assistant that can actually learn about you and your needs.




At the stealth start-up called Viv Labs a small team of engineers claim to be on the verge of realizing an advanced form of AI assistant. As the minds behind Apple's Siri, they are definitely worth listening to.

As part of the growing explosion of artificial intelligence systems, Viv Labs is contributing to the field, and looking ahead.  “Siri is chapter one of a much longer, bigger story,” says Dag Kittlaus, one of Viv’s co-founders.

Kittlaus, and cofounders, Adam Cheyer and Chris Brigham believe we will all have our own virtual assistant one day. The system will do everything for you – book your flight, make your hotel reservation, remind you to pick up your child from school, and order your next pizza. There are many pieces to this puzzle for it to work. The first one is voice recognition. The second piece is extremely deep domain expertise. For example, in order to book a flight, you need many inputs and access to various websites or travel agents to do the booking.

While Siri, has been explicitly programmed for responses, Viv, say the start-up's founders, will be able to teach itself, opening up almost limitless capabilities. “I want to do something bigger than mobile, bigger than consumer, bigger than desktop or enterprise. I want to do something that could fundamentally change the way software is built,” Cheyer says.

Viv will be able to use your personal preferences and a near-infinite web of connections to answer almost any query and perform almost any function.

They see its icon joining the pantheon of familiar symbols like Power On, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Quite a few things have to go right for Viv to make good on its founders’ promises. It has to prove that its code-making skills can scale to include petabytes of data. It has to continually get smarter through self-learning, and it has to win users, and developers despite not having a preexisting base like Google and Apple have.

Moreover, writes Wired's Steven Levy, "it has to be as seductive as Scarlett Johansson in Her so that people are comfortable sharing their personal information with a robot that might become one of the most important forces in their lives."

When Viv is released, the competition between Siri, Google Now, Amazon’s Fire TV voice, Cortana, and more should heat up even more.

Microsoft May Release Cortana In April

Microsoft is working on its 'Cortana' rival to Apple's Siri and Google Now, which will be integrated into new Windows smart phones and devices as soon as April.




According to a rumor, Microsoft’s voice-activated personal assistant called  'Cortanta' will debut in beta form for developers on Lumia devices as part of the Windows Phone mobile operating platform and will later be expanded to Apple’s iPhone via the Bing app.

MSFTNerd reports that Microsoft also plans to eventually expand Cortana’s availability to the Xbox One and the upcoming “Threshold” Windows release in 2015. Cortana will initially only be available to U.S.-based users, but other English-speaking territories will be added throughout 2015 and 2016.

The name Cortana was derived from an artificial intelligence character in Microsoft’s highly successful Halo videogame series. According to MSFTNerd, the personal digital assistant will be voiced by Jen Taylor, the same actress who voiced the videogame character.

Similar to the voice-activated personal assistants developed by Apple and Google, Cortana will be capable of understanding users’ natural language queries. According to MSFTNerd, users will activate Cortana by prefacing their questions with the phrase, “Bing Tell Me…”

Although MSFTNerd’s report did not refer to Microsoft’s upcoming Build developer conference in April, it is likely that the Windows Phone version of Cortana will be unveiled at that event. The first hints about Cortana’s existence emerged in a Microsoft memo penned by former CEO Steve Ballmer last year.

In the memo, Ballmer discussed a “service-enabled shell” that “will be deeply personalized, based on the advanced, almost magical, intelligence in our cloud that learns more and more over time about people and the world.” Cortana will likely be powered by Bing’s Satori knowledge base, similar to the way that Siri is powered by Wolfram Alpha. According to MSFTNerd, certain speech recognition improvements that were developed for Cortana have already shown up in the Bing Translator app for Windows.

Siri – which was originally released by Apple in 2011 – was considered a major selling point for Apple’s iPhone 4S. However, since Siri’s debut, various other personal digital assistants have been developed and released on other platforms. For example, Google Now was released by Google in the year following Siri’s release.
