How To Gain a Competitive Edge in the Tech Field

Technology is a hot industry. With billions of people online and using technology on a daily basis, it's safe to say that tech has secured a place in the lives of the majority of people. As the tech industry continues to evolve, you may be considering a career change in favor of a tech company.

There are many options for tech company opportunities, and Dallas is exploding as a tech company hub. Whether you come from a major metropolitan area or are moving to a big city for the first time, you'll want to get a leg up on the competition. Here's how you can give yourself the edge in the Dallas tech field:

Qualifications and certifications

Dot your i's and cross your t's by earning a tech certificate prior to applying. Although many places are hiring tech gurus, it's essential that you set yourself apart from the crowd. Whether you have a background or degree in technology may not be as important as current technology knowledge. Technology is an ever-evolving field. Find a good place to get current with technology trends and let the job market know about your expertise.

Have expertise beyond technology

On the other hand, if you're not tech-savvy, you can still find new tech companies in Dallas. How come? Well, tech companies are very similar to other companies in that it takes all kinds of people, departments, and skills to be an effective business. While you may not be able to develop software or come up with the next Facebook, having skills like financial analysis, strong writing abilities, and a natural inclination for learning are valuable to tech companies.

Fearlessly admit ignorance

Tech companies are overrun by people who know everything about the technical workings of technology. So when you admit you don't know something, it's refreshing to employers. This applies to all businesses, not just technology, but it will help demonstrate your integrity. From the very first interview, make sure you are open and honest about your capabilities.

As new technologies emerge, it's easy to think you need to be highly qualified to execute innovative projects. But since some technology (like augmented reality) is so new, it's not a requirement that you're an expert. It's a requirement that you're willing to try and you have the guts to create something new.

Study trends

Make sure you keep up to date with trends in general. While keeping up on technology trends is good, being aware of current trends across a variety of industries and interests will serve you well. Read trade journals, business journals, and general trend analysis from the New York Times and The Economist. By continuously checking the temperature on what's happening in the world, you'll be able to speak with confidence on the direction of technology. After all, technology exists to improve the way we communicate and solve problems. You should know what people are talking about and what pain points they are having on a macro level.

The tech industry can be intimidating. But it doesn't have to be. If you make an effort to learn about different technologies, how companies and people are using tech, and what opportunities there may be to use tech to improve an issue, you'll be successful in supporting your value. Anyone can learn to code or program a computer, but it takes a curious, intelligent person to make a difference when it comes to technology. Don't be another cog in the wheel. Look at the world holistically and bring that viewpoint to your tech company interviews.
