What Is The Difference Between Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning?

Artificial Intelligence

Now that we are leaving in the 21st century, we are surrounded with new scientific discoveries, improved technology, and new medical discoveries. But, what we want to discuss about is the fact that we are surrounded with artificial intelligence, yet not many people are familiar with this term. This is exactly why it is so common for people to mix the two terms that we mentioned in the topic – artificial intelligence and machine learning.

For those of you who are already involved with some branch of the computer technologies, you are probably familiar with these two terms. This is why we decided to decide this article for those of you who are not too familiar yet are interested to find out more about the topic of artificial intelligence. After this article, you will no longer make the mistake of mixing these two terms and maybe this is the chance that you have been looking for to obtain more knowledge in the area of the computer sciences.

A few facts about Artificial Intelligence

What we have in mind about this article, is to introduce a few facts about artificial intelligence and then a few facts about machine learning. That way you will be able to see the difference between these two terms!

To define it using the simplest terms, artificial intelligence, or simply AI, is a computer system that scientists have to develop to complete tasks that humans normally would. To watch an artificial intelligence as it works, it is very hard to determine if it was, in fact, a human or a computer completing the task.

There are two types of artificial intelligence–applied and general. The applied artificial intelligence is the one that is most commonly used nowadays.

The first thought of artificial intelligence was made in the 1950s when Alan Turing, a famous computer scientist, and logician, published a paper called “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” in which for the first time questioned if the computers can really think. In this same paper, he suggested the idea that a computer can think if a person is not able to recognize if it is the computer that is working or if there is a person behind it.

A few facts about Machine Learning

Since Artificial intelligence has been invented, many people have tried to use it in different ways. One example of artificial intelligence that we meet in our lives is the chatbot, which is a system that through the usage of artificial intelligence, communicates with people on various topics. Most commonly, chatbots are used from various brands to expand their marketing techniques. But enough about the chatbots, we are here to discuss machine learning!

What we meant by mentioning the chatbots, is that machine learning is yet another system that using artificial intelligence and given the access to the needed data, can, in fact, learn for itself and then use that information for further image recognition, data mining, etc. So machine learning is really an applied artificial intelligence in real life, whereas artificial intelligence is the system itself.

The first idea of machine learning appeared in 1959 when Arthur Samuel, an American pioneer in the field of computer gaming and artificial intelligence, especially machine learning, first went on to investigate if artificial intelligence could be used to create a system that could learn for itself and modify its behavior according to what it had studied.

Machine learning is what has made data mining and analysis so popular in the last period and what it has made it so much easier compared with the past!

Keeping up with all the latest news right now can be hard and overwhelming, especially if you are trying to keep up with the new discoveries from an area to which you have no professional relation to. But not only could it be overwhelming, at times it is pretty confusing as well. One example of it is to make a difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning. Most of you probably have already heard about artificial intelligence, but maybe not about machine learning and you are making the mistake of thinking that it is all the same. We hope that we managed to show you the difference of how artificial intelligence is, in fact, the whole system and machine learning is just another system that uses Artificial intelligence to fulfill its task. It is all the same with virtual assistants, chatbots and etc. Now that we have listed a few of the most important facts that you should know about artificial intelligence and Machine learning, you will never again make the mistake to mix these two terms again! But also do not hesitate to learn a bit more about Artificial intelligence, since it is all around us!
