Singularity
The new short film 'ANA' looks at how a negative Singularity might come about through the trickery of an advanced artificial intelligence. Can we work to avoid such a future?
In an original science fiction take on the Singularity, “ANA,” from Factory Fifteen, tells the story of Jim, a Detroit auto factory worker who overrides a security system to give the factory's artificial intelligence more control to catch up with a perceived backlog. Although he knows he should get authorization, Jim, played by Richard Brake, falls for ANA's trick. Jim's actions quickly manifest themselves as ANA alters the production line to start churning out machines that definitely aren't cars.

ANA looks at the point where artificial intelligence becomes self aware and more intelligent than the human race, and unfortunately for us it seems, decides to do something about us. "We created a seven minute proof of concept, teasing at a larger project currently in development," write the film's creators. "Our role developed along the course of the project from consultation and script development, to directing an ambitious live action shoot and finally delivering TV standard visual effects, all in house in the Factory Fifteen Studio."A future where the machines take over, like the depiction in ANA is often referred to as negative Singularity. It represents a version of our self-destruction in which a technological superintelligence arises. Frequently science fiction takes this route for storytelling reasons (and lately we see this as avenue to explore the latest in CGI special effects).
Even the most benign version a negative Singularity should be considered an existential risk to human beings. Independent researchers like Eliezer Yudkowsky and organizations like the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) and the Elon Musk-funded Future of Life Institute (FLI) are working on avoiding and preventing such a future.
As MIRI's webpage states, "We do foundational mathematical research to ensure smarter-than-human artificial intelligence has a positive impact."
“The danger with the Terminator scenario isn’t that it will happen, but that it distracts from the real issues posed by future AI”, said FLI president Max Tegmark.
What do you think are these organizations already too far behind today's exponential artificial intelligence progress or can they help us avoid the scenario put to screen in ANA?
