During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce dust storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.
This is the basic plot of the story by Andy Weir that has been adapted for film in, "The Martian."

Based on the trailer above, the film looks to build on the recent trend in film of 'realistic' science fiction as we saw in Gravity and Interstellar. The film also borrows some of the key cast members from the later film.

Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield gave the book a strong review: "It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like 'MacGyver' meets 'Mysterious Island.'"
