After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, an astronaut finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce dust storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.

This is the basic plot of the story by Andy Weir that has been adapted for film in, "The Martian."

With only meager supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

Based on the trailer above, the film looks to build on the recent trend in film of 'realistic' science fiction as we saw in Gravity and Interstellar. The film also borrows some of the key cast members from the later film.

"In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option—I'm going to have to science the s**t out of this."

Based on best-selling novel by Weir, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, The Martian features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield gave the book a strong review: "It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like 'MacGyver' meets 'Mysterious Island.'"
