Energy
New fuel sources will help slow the effects of global warming and other harmful effects of pollution. Here are some of the potential alternative energy sources that may be widely used in the future. |

Alternative energy sources often refer to any types of energy that are not fossil fuels. Most modern energy companies are making an effort to study and develop alternate energy sources to lower emissions and help the planet. In recent years, governments around the world have dedicated an increasing amount of their resources to developing alternative energy sources.
Landfill Gas
One of the things all landfills have in common, is their emission of methane gas. This gas can be permitted to be released into the air, or collected. Landfill gas has the possibility to generate large amounts of electrical energy when converted to energy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created something called the Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) in 1994. The goal of the program is to promote the development of projects around the United States dedicated to developing technologies for converting landfill gas to energy. Currently, there are over 2,000 active landfills in the United States. There are also over 380 operational LMOP projects. The EPA has identified more than 620 other landfills that are good candidates for the LMOP project. The goal of the LMOP is to determine equipment costs and potential revenue from selling electricity created from this energy source.Related articles |
Biomass Fuel
This refers to any type of plant waste that can be utilized as fuel. This could include everything from agricultural waste, to wood waste. It also includes certain crops that can be used as fuel and more. Fuel created from biomass can be used with coal in a coal-fired plant to more efficiently produce electricity. Ethanol is a biomass fuel that can be used alone, or as an additive for gasoline. There are some countries around the world that power most of their vehicles with an ethanol and gasoline mix. The country that produces the most biodiesel fuel in the world is Germany. The benefit of biomass fuel is even though it creates carbon dioxide when it burns, this fuel had been determined to be carbon neutral.Ocean Power
There are power tidal plants around the world that are designed to utilize the energy resulting from the flow of tides coming in and going out of a bay or estuary. It works with a unique dam structure called a barrage. This is designed to separate the tidal area into upper and lower basins. Turbines are located in the barrage. They turn as the water flows between the two basins. This will be determined by the direction of the tide. The turning of the turbines will power a generator, which is how energy is generated from the ocean.Finding alternative energy sources continues to be on the forefront of research and development for today’s technology companies. Looking at these new ingenious fuel sources, we will be better prepared to find ways of helping the earth and slowing the effects of global warming.
