Microsoft Kinect Sensor

 Gadgets
Details of the upcoming new Kinect sensor for Microsoft's new gaming console, "Durango" have been leaked.  The new Kinect is rumoured to feature a wider field of view and better capture capabilies, combined with a USB 3.0  connection.
More than just a video game device, the Kinect from Microsoft (using PrimeSense technology) has applications for robotics, sensing and many other applications.  With USB functionality, the new Kinect may also soon provide a natural user interface to more of our PCs.

The rumored next generation Kinect, for the next generation Microsoft game console code-named "Durango" is widely expected to be released at E3 in June.  There's a rumor that the new Kinect will come with some much improved specifications, including a USB 3.0 connection which will probably be a boon for hackers and developers.

Just to note that these specifications are rumored. The leak website VGA Leaks is the source.

The next generation sensor improves the current sensor in many areas:
  • -Improved field of view results in much larger play space.
  • -RGB stream is higher quality and higher resolution.
  • -Depth stream is much higher resolution and able to resolve much smaller objects.
  • -Higher depth stream accuracy enables separating objects in close depth proximity.
  • -Higher depth stream accuracy captures depth curvature around edges better.
  • -Active infrared (IR) stream permits lighting independent processing and feature recognition.
  • -End to end pipeline latency is improved by 33 ms.

The skeleton tracking system on Durango will be enhanced over the Xbox 360 system with the following new or improved features.

New features:
  • -Tracking of players with height of one meter.
  • -One mode for both seated and standing players.
  • -Detection of hand states, for example, open or closed hands.
  • -Detection of extra joints, and rotations for some joints.

Impoved features:
  • -Tracking of six, rather than two, active players.
  • -Tracking of occluded joints, for example, an elbow occluded by a hand.
  • -Detection of joint positions.
  • -Detection of sideways poses.

Perhaps signaling the functionality, the PrimeSense blog offers the following user experience snippet:
...imagine coming home and sitting on your couch and the TV automatically comes on, volume slowly rising until you raise your hand to signal ‘enough’. You watch some sports, drink a cold beverage and the phone rings. As you pick it up, the volume fades out to allow you to speak freely. You leave to fix something to eat in the kitchen and the TV pauses until you return. This simple scenario, which could have originated in Hollywood, is 100% doable today with off-the-shelf technology. All it needs is someone to productize it.
