PrimeSense, the company behind the XBox Kinect system recently released a video demonstrating how its 3D Sensing technology could impact the future.  From televisions to gaming to robotics and more, 3D sensing promises to change the way we interact with our devices and will stir debate as to their proper uses.

T he company behind the technology in your Kinect, PrimeSense recently released a video showing how their technology could be used in the not-to-distant future in the style of Corning's A World Made of Glass.

Beyond just gaming, the PrimeSense 3D sensing technology has the ability to revolutionize many industries, products and services in ways that we may not have even thought of yet.

Whether it’s fully immersive motion-controlled games in front of your TV; robots that help care for the elderly; digital signage that can see who the customer is and displays content that’s relevant to them; or the ability to affordably convert any size of screen into a touch or almost-touch screen the sensor technology behind PrimeSense, and other companies like Leap Motion is radically changing how devices function and what they can do.

Already with the Kinect, gamers today can have a completely immersive full-body experience, without the need for any handheld accessories. Now PrimeSense is also enabling smarter TVs by giving them the gift of sight and viewers the ability to control them using simple gestures. This technology is also already installed in some laptop PCs.

In the past few years, the robotics industry has doubled in size. And this trend is only expected to continue. In the near future, robots will become part of our everyday life. They’ll assist with elderly care, extend their reach in security, and will circulate and communicate with networked devices in our homes and work places.

Sensing technology is opening up new possibilities in robotics with its affordable sensors. They allow all robots, like iRobot's AVA to see their surroundings just as humans do. This empowers them to understand their environment, which dramatically improves their capabilities, human interactions and independent navigation.

As is shown in the video, our personal as well as public devices are increasingly going to be aware of the people and objects in our 3D environments.  This technology will enable robotics, artificial intelligence and security systems, but will also stir debate around the issues of privacy.
