3D Printing Revolutionizing Architecture and Design

Neri Oxman, professor of Media Arts at MIT's Media Lab is using 3D printing to explore form in a revolutionary way.  With 3D printers now allowing mixed materials, Oxman has examined how the technology allows striking new forms and possibilities, and democratizes design.

In the insightful interview below, Neri Oxman, architect, designer and professor of Media Arts and Sciences and Director of the Mediated Matter group at the MIT Media Lab, explains the differences between 'additive' and 'subtractive' manufacturing.

Oxman was named to ICON's list of the ìtop 20 most influential architects to shape our futureî (2009), and was selected as one of the "100 most creative people" by FASTCOMPANY (2009). In 2008, she was named "Revolutionary Mind" by SEED Magazine. Her work has been exhibited at MoMA (NYC) and is part of the museumís permanent collection; other exhibitions include the Museum of Science (Boston, MA), FRAC Collection (Orleans, France), and the 2010 Beijing Biennale.
Inspired by things that 'grow' in nature, Oxman uses the world's most advanced 3D printing technology - the Objet Connex500 multi-material 3D printer to produce some incredible models.

Oxman’s exhibited her work ‘Imaginary Beings, Mythologies of the Not Yet’ at the Centre Pompidou in Paris earlier this year. Her exhibit, which features 18 prototypes of the human body, were all created on the Objet Connex multi-material 3D printer and attacted considerable attention from artists, designers and members of the public. Eight of the pieces exhibited were made part of the Pomidou's permanent collection.

Oxman explains  3D printing within the wider paradigm shift in technology and manufacturing - comparing it to the Gutenberg 2D print revolution of the 1440's. —
