Apioneer in the field of robotics, Hugh Durrant-Whyte recently talked at the TEDxSydney event addressing what a robot is and what a isn't.

According to Durrant-Whyte, a robot is not just a mechanical automaton. A robot perceives and a robot acts. Hugh leaves open the question of whether the robots will get us all in the end.

Durrant-Whyte is a field robotics innovator and his work has helped bring Australia to the top of the robotics tree. His robots are at home in real world environments such as farms, the dockside and mines. Durrant-Whyte's work on probabilistic methods for robotics and the algorithms developed in his group since the early 1990s permit autonomous vehicles to deal with uncertainty and to localize themselves despite noisy sensor readings (simultaneous localization and mapping SLAM).

Currently, he is the CEO of NICTA, Australia's Information and Communications Technology Research Centre. For a man as passionate about technology as he is, he equally eschews it. He does not own a mobile phone. He rides his push bike everywhere.
