The DSME Marine Robot Pavilion at Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea will be the largest pavilion of the entire exposition. The expo’s theme this year is “The Living Ocean and Coast”, which explains the unique focus on marine robotics.
A total of 73 robots will be shown at Expo 2012, including some from the United States (Virginia Tech RoMeLa), Britain, and France. It seems likely that most of the robots will be returning favorites from the Shanghai Expo, which took place in 2010. Echoing the futurism exhibits from yesteryear, conceptual robots will demonstrate how technology will be used in the year 2040, including a mechanical squid that uses its tentacles to search for minerals.
The pavilion will showcase five zones:
ZONE 1
Entering the Robot World
The design of Zone 1 is inspired by large scale plastic model parts which challenge the visitors to imagine what the completed robots would look like.ZONE 2
Robot Warehouse
High-end storage facility for the robots in the future to symbolize the wonders of the current robotics technology
ZONE 3
Robot Soccer
This exhibtion presents a soccer game played by the robots and provides an opportunity for visitors understand the current progress of the robot technology.
ZONE 4
Robot Lab
Weighing around a ton, the statue above was planned by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Planning with an animatronics company. Workers constructing it reach only knee-high.
ZONE 5
Deep Sea
This space provides an educational exhibition on the deep sea, an opportunity to understand the background of the birth of the five marine robots, various video images, models, and a robot performance in which the robots and the lighting are joined together. We look forward to seeing more as the pavilions are constructed.
