Crowd Fund A DIY High Resolution 3D Printer

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Having built an inexpensive, high resolution 3D printer kit, the Singapore-based designers for the Veloso 3D Printer are determined to make their product accessible to everyone. They raised over $50,000 in only two days and are rapidly continuing to raise money at their Indiegogo crowd funding site.

Rapid Prototyping (RP) is a common name given to a variety of technologies that are used to create three dimensional prototypes directly from CAD files or digitally scanned data. It is also known as 3D printing. In general the technologies create models of material in thin layers. These additive technologies offer advantages in many applications compared to subtractive fabrication methods such as milling, or turning and offer large cost savings for smaller production over injection moulding methods.

The Veloso 3D Printer uses a new technology based on liquid polymers and light. Which results in great precision, quality and ability to print complex objects.

The light source is DLP projection-based similar to that used in offices, and schools.

The machine is simple with few moving parts, making it very easy to assemble.

Some other details:

  • Building Area: 150 x 112 x 200mm (XYZ)
  • DLP Projector: 1024 x 768 (Native)
  • Resolution: 15 to 100 Microns Z - 147 microns XY (XY resolution can be improved by reducing the building area - this will be possible in the kit)
  • Weight: under 15 kg for complete kit
  • Size: Desktop printer size
  • Office friendly: low noise (almost nothing)
