Future of Cities to be Discussed at 10 Downing Street

Thursday, February 23, 2012

British Prime Minister David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Steve Hilton, and major policy makers attend the Urban Conference at 10 Downing Street to learn the latest ways and ideas to improve overall city design and make Britain’s cities safer for cyclists in the future. The speakers include Richard Rogers, Mitchell Joachim, Bjarke Ingels, Carlo Ratti, Thomas Heatherwick, Mitchell Weiss, and others.

Under discussion is urban design in the UK’s capital with a concentration on safety for London’s many cyclists and how the UK can learn from successful schemes in the US and Scandinavia.

Bjarke Ingels is set to speak on the accomplishments of his ‘8 House’ project in Copenhagen, where residents are encouraged to cycle around the complex and Carlo Ratti will present the concept behind the ‘Copenhagen Wheel’, which can be attached to a push bike to store energy when the brakes are squeezed and released when the cyclist struggles uphill.
